China Media: Artist Ai Weiwei Released

BEIJING—Detained Chinese artist Ai Weiwei was released on bail due to a "good attitude in confessing" to alleged crimes and due to a chronic disease he suffers from, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported Wednesday, citing Beijing police.

Police detained Mr. Ai in April amid a crackdown that saw detentions of dozens of other artists, political activists, lawyers, writers and religious leaders, and that analysts said was partly spurred by Chinese concern about unrest across the Arab world.

Mr. Ai was also released because he repeatedly said he is willing to pay taxes he allegedly evaded, Xinhua cited the police as saying.

A company Mr. Ai controlled, Beijing Fake Cultural Development Ltd, evaded "a huge amount" of taxes and destroyed accounting documents, Xinhua cited police as saying.
